Show:

FRL units are air preparation assemblies that condition compressed air at the point of entry to a pneumatic circuit, ensuring downstream cylinders, valves, and actuators receive clean, regulated air at the correct pressure. An air filter regulator lubricator combines filtration, pressure regulation, and optional lubrication into a single modular assembly that can be maintained in place and replaced element by element without interrupting the wider installation. PLC Direct stocks FRL unit hardware from Festo for replacement and maintenance in existing installed pneumatic systems.

Where Are FRL Units Used in Industrial Environments?

FRL units are positioned at the entry to each pneumatic circuit or machine section to protect downstream components from the moisture, oil contamination, and pressure fluctuations that raw compressed air supplies commonly contain. Without proper air preparation, cylinders, valves, and tools in pneumatic systems wear prematurely or fail unpredictably, making FRL maintenance and timely replacement directly tied to the service life of all downstream components.

Facilities and operations that depend on FRL units include:

  • Precision machining centers where clean, dry, regulated air is required for pneumatic tools, clamping systems, and air bearing spindles

  • Paint booths and surface coating lines where oil-free, contamination-free air is essential to prevent surface defects in finished coatings

  • Pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing, where compressed air purity requirements mandate regular filter element monitoring and scheduled replacement

  • Electronic assembly environments where moisture and particulate contamination from unfiltered air can damage sensitive components during pneumatic handling

  • Automated test equipment and quality control systems, where stable, regulated pressure ensures consistent pneumatic force across test cycles

Maintaining FRL units in proper working order protects the downstream components they serve and extends the service life of the installed pneumatic system.

Which Brands of FRL Units Does PLC Direct Stock?

PLC Direct stocks FRL units from Festo for replacement and maintenance in existing installed systems.

  • Festo MS4 series: Compact modular service units covering filter regulators and individual air preparation components for smaller pneumatic circuits and machine installations.

  • Festo MS6 series: Higher-flow modular service units covering filter-regulator combinations and individual air preparation components for larger pneumatic circuits with greater air demand.

  • Festo MS series modular components: Individual filter elements, pressure regulator modules, and lubricator units for component-level replacement within installed MS series service assemblies.

All FRL unit hardware in this collection is available as Sealed Surplus, Never Used Surplus, or Used/Refurbished, subject to inventory.

What Should You Know Before Ordering FRL Units?

Hardware condition options: FRL unit hardware is supplied as Sealed Surplus, Never Used Surplus, or Used/Refurbished. For assembled filter-regulator units, Sealed Surplus units provide new filter elements and intact seals. Used/Refurbished units have been inspected, tested, and restored to working condition.

Compatibility and part identification: FRL units and individual components within the MS4 and MS6 series are selected based on the circuit's flow requirements and the port connection size of the installed assembly. Replacement components within the MS series modular system must match the installed series; confirm the installed unit's series designation and port connection size before ordering to ensure dimensional and functional compatibility.

Warranty: All FRL units purchased from PLC Direct carry a standard 1-year PLC Direct warranty, not an OEM warranty, covering defects and functionality, applicable to all condition grades. This warranty is issued by PLC Direct as an independent supplier. PLC Direct supplies FRL units hardware for replacement and maintenance purposes and does not provide system design, programming, or integration services.

Frequently Asked Questions

A general-purpose particulate filter removes solid contaminants and bulk water from the compressed air supply but does not efficiently remove fine oil aerosols. A coalescing filter uses a finer filter medium designed specifically to capture and drain oil mist and fine water aerosols, and is required in applications where even trace oil contamination is unacceptable.
Many modern pneumatic cylinders and valves are manufactured with pre-lubricated or self-lubricating seals that do not require additional oil mist, and introducing lubrication to these systems can degrade the installed seals over time. If the downstream pneumatic equipment specifies oil-free operation, a filter-regulator without a lubricator element is the correct air preparation unit for that circuit.
A filter element typically requires replacement when the pressure differential across it becomes noticeable, indicating the element is saturated with contamination and restricting airflow to downstream components. Many FRL units include a visual differential pressure indicator that signals when the element has reached the end of service life before the restriction affects system performance.
The filter bowl drain removes condensate that accumulates in the bowl as the filter separates moisture from the compressed air supply, preventing water from being carried downstream into cylinders and valves. Drains are available in manual versions that require periodic opening and in automatic versions that continuously discharge condensate; confirm the drain type matches the maintenance practices of the installed system when ordering a replacement unit.
